For
many of people suffering from anxiety, anti-anxiety medicines
become a part of their everyday life. Unfortunately, these
medications usually have a high risk of dependency, and users
tend to develop a tolerance to them fairly quickly.
Another
problem with anti- anxiety medication is that it usually only
takes care of the anxiety symptoms, but doesn’t help
treat the problem itself. If you are struggling with this,
you might find help trying out natural remedies for
anxiety.
Medical companies and MD’s sometimes
make it seem like there are no other options when you are
dealing with anxiety other than just suffering with it or
taking an anti anxiety drug. This is not necessarily true.
There are a lot of different options out there for someone
who doesn’t want to take medication, or is looking for
a more long term solution to the problem.
First of all, there might be some things you
are doing now that are not helping your situation. People
who have a lot of anxiety should cut out, or at least cut
way down on their caffeine intake. Caffeine is a stimulant
and in high doses it can cause anxiety even in people who
don’t usually experience this. Other triggers could
be sugar, stress, some food allergies and various deficiencies
in the body.
Here
are some often recommended natural remedies for anxiety:
Exercise—according
to sciencedaily.com, recent studies indicates that “relatively
high-intensity exercise is superior in reducing stress and
anxiety.” Studies show that especially in women, there
seems to be a high correlation between high intensity exercise
and reduced anxiety levels.
Fish oil—fish oil contains a lot of
omega 3 which is a vital fatty acid. Numerous studies all
over the world have shown that omega 3 can help stabilize
moods and reduce anxiety and depression. If you don’t
get enough fish in your diet, you can take a fish oil or cod
liver oil supplement to ensure you get a healthy dose of omega
3 each day. Omega 3 is also found in flaxseed for those who
need a vegan supplement.
Vitamin
B—anxiety can be a side effect of a vitamin B deficiency.
Vitamin B helps the body deal with stress. You can get more
vitamin B in you diet by eating leafy greens, or you can ask
your doctor or naturopath about a supplement.

Magnesium— a magnesium deficiency can
lead to anxiety, and ironically, stress can lead to an increased
loss of magnesium in the body. Most people do not have enough
magnesium in their diet, and some articles even go as far
as to say that all people in the US have a magnesium deficiency.
The RDA is 400mg, preferably taken with food.
Relaxation techniques— meditation and
yoga is proven to be one of the most effective natural remedies
for anxiety, and has no negative side effects. Sign up for
classes or buy a yoga or meditation DVD and practice at home.
Don’t quit your anxiety medication without
consulting with your doctor. Always talk to a doctor or naturopath
before you start taking natural remedies for anxiety, and
only introduce one thing at a time to your diet so you can
tell what works, and so that it’s easy to trace the
source should you have an allergic reaction to a supplement.
It
is also important for anxiety sufferers to be pro-active and
not fall into the trap of feeling like a "victim."
Remember, anxiety is a "state of mind" problem,
so keeping a positive outlook can contribute greatly to your
recovery, no matter which natural remedies for anxiety you
choose.
